"Together we raised $15,192 for Surfrider Foundation VI on Blue Friday"
This is the first year we didn't black out the store front completely on November 29th. We have always flipped the bird at the consumerism shit show that is Black Friday.
We're a little more tame up here in the North than our good friends in America, but in recent years we've been playing catch up as the day becomes more prominent in our own culture.
The problem is the steep discounts often inspire unnecessary purchases. Having a holiday essentially dedicated to buying stuff further promotes the culture of mass consumerism that has us headed in a pretty shitty direction. It also perpetuates the cycle of deliberate overproduction in fashion.
Anyways, rant over, you get it.
This year we stayed open, for one main reason.
Accessibility.
For many people, sales mean they are able to afford premium products that otherwise may not fit into their budget. We're extremely transparent about our costs of production and work very hard to sell our clothing at a fair price all year around - why we rarely ever run sales. So you won't see 70% off from us.
But by closing, we were taking away the option of buying something good for the planet on a day many people will buy because they can afford things they need.
So we started Blue Friday.
This year we partnered with Surfrider and 8 other local businesses and all pledged to donate 100% of our profits from November 29th sales to the Rise Above Plastics Campaign.
Together we raised $15,192 for an amazing cause and the campaign to change the focus from consumerism to conservation was hugely successful, thanks to all you who got behind us on this one.
We don't think this will be a one off.
Blue is the new Black.
Shout out to all the other amazing brands who participated - Goldilocks, West Coast Refill, Zero Waste Emporium, Nootka & Sea, Ecologyst, Salt Shop and Wychbury Ave.
