The Cold Snap Photo Comp

We all know 2020 was kind of a shit year. With one exception: waves.

A La Nina winter kicked off one of the more memorable hurricane seasons for our friends on the East Coast and then served up absurd consistency and size for the West Coast through our winter.

I honestly thought La Nina meant less waves but clearly, I’m not a meteorologist.

After one of the more memorable winters in recent years and a lot of talented creatives stuck on their home shores, we saw some of the most epic shots circling the inter-webs.

That’s why we thought there was no better year to launch something we’ve wanted to do for a long time: The Cold Snap Photo Comp.

We opened two categories for the comp, action and lifestyle with $1000 up for grabs.

Submissions can range from surf, snow, landscapes, adventures and everything in between. The annual contest will highlight the greatest season and hopefully bring some attention to some of the unreal local talent in front and behind the lens.

Contest is open March 1st – May 1st and winner will be announced May 14th. No limit to entries so go wild.

FAQ:

Do I have to be from the Island or Canada to enter?

Island, no. Canada, yes. Contest is open coast to coast in Canada. The shot can be from anywhere though. Just obviously winter themed, hence the contest name. You just need to be a Canadian photog and we're definitely giving a little extra love to shots in our own backyard.

What category should I enter?

The categories are deliberately broad. Enter what you feel fits, it can be an untouched powder day, a summit camping trip with the crew or your buddy pulling into a cold-water keg. Photos that align with the L/L Supply aesthetic are favoured in judging so just keep that in mind.

How does judging work?

Two judges are going to make the call on the winners. Jeff Duke, the founder of L/L Supply and Mackenzie Duncan an internationally recognized photographer from Victoria.

Will my images be used for marketing?

Absolutely not. Ever. We take the rights to your work very seriously. Photos will be shared on social media surrounding the photo comp and to promote awareness of the annual contest intermittently. Your photo will never we duplicated, printed, sold or used in paid ads without your written permission. The full rules are on the entry but suffice it to say, hell no as a general answer.

What kind of photos do I submit and what is L/L Supply's aesthetic?

Our aesthetic should hopefully speak for itself via our website and socials. As far as photos, winter themed action or lifestyle. This can be be surf, snow, camping, climbing, landscapes, ocean, mountains - whatever. There's no specific box as we left it deliberately broad. Judging will be on the overall artistic composition of the photo, the difficulty of the shot and its relevance to the contest parameters.

Do the photos have to be from this winter?

Uh, yeah that would be nice… but how would we know otherwise?
